A Message to Our Friends

Shen Yun

Dear friends,

First, we hope this message finds you and your loved ones healthy and well. In these strange and uncertain times, we wish everyone courage and strength, and look forward to the brighter days that certainly lie ahead.

For us here at Shen Yun headquarters in New York, the sudden cancellation of performances is devastating. Almost overnight, all seven of our companies stopped performing and some 400 shows were canceled. That’s almost a million people who bought tickets and will be unable to see Shen Yun. When our artists got the news they were in the middle of getting ready for shows in New York, Vancouver, Sydney, and Orlando. Dancers stood and stared at each other in shock, some with tears in their eyes.

Over our 14 years, we have fought for every single performance. When the Chinese embassies tried to cancel our shows around the world, we fought back and we still performed. When recession hit and performing arts companies all around us were going bankrupt, we tightened our belts and continued. When a blizzard canceled our show, we rescheduled it the next day. When fire alarms kicked everyone out of the theater in Philadelphia, when a traffic accident caused long delays in Miami, when our dancers were tired and hurt and sleepless, we always still performed.

From the day of its inception, Shen Yun’s mission has been to bring the beauty and depth of traditional Chinese culture to the stage, and provide audiences with an experience of hope and renewal. Performing for you is truly our joy, and is what inspires both our artists and staff. As we face the spread of the CCP virus* (COVID-19), however, the health of our patrons as well as our artists has become the highest priority.

We would like to thank you for your tremendous support during this difficult time. And we are pleased to announce that Shen Yun will prepare and bring you an even more incredible production in the coming year!

* Why we call COVID-19 the “CCP virus”

There’s been controversy about what the virus that’s unleashed a worldwide pandemic should be called. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) prefers “novel coronavirus.” Others have referred to it as the “Wuhan virus.”

We have chosen to follow the lead taken by some media and other organizations and call it the “CCP virus.” The name holds the CCP accountable for its cover up and disregard for human life.

We feel “CCP virus” is an accurate name, and invite you to consider using it, too.
